This page provides specialist information about precision dentures for patients who have lost some or all their teeth. Treatment is planned and delivered by Dr Tony Kilcoyne, a UK-registered Specialist in Prosthodontics (GDC No. 58373) with over 35 years’ experience in advanced tooth replacement and denture care, locally in the Keighley area, Bradford..

Prosthodontics is the recognised dental specialty covering complete dentures, partial dentures, implant-supported dentures, dental implants and complex mouth reconstruction. There is no higher formal qualification than Specialist, in denture, crowns, bridges, Implants, veneer treatments in the UK.

What makes precision dentures different?

Precision dentures go beyond standard “plates”. They involve detailed assessment of jaw position, muscle balance, tongue space, lip support and bite forces, so that the dentures work *with* the mouth rather than against it.

This approach is good for all but especially important where patients have:

  • Very flat or severely shrunken gums
  • Loose or unstable lower dentures
  • Flabby ridges or uneven soft tissues
  • Speech or control difficulties after illness or stroke
  • Cleft palate or surgical defects

Precision dentures with or without dental implants

Some patients achieve good function with carefully designed precision dentures. Others benefit greatly from implant-retained or implant-supported dentures, particularly in the lower jaw where bone loss shrinkage is common and even severely flat.

As a Specialist in Prosthodontics, Dr Kilcoyne assesses whether implants are genuinely beneficial, explains realistic outcomes, and helps patients choose the most appropriate long-term solution for comfort, stability and value. We work with you, individually.

Precision Dentures – Specialist in Partial or Complete Full Dentures for Confidence & Comfort

Custom-made bespoke dentures for patients who have lost all their teeth – best planned and fitted by a UK Specialist in Prosthodontics, for improved stability, appearance and confidence.

Losing many or all your natural teeth can affect how you eat, speak and smile – as well as how you feel about yourself. Precision dentures aim to go beyond “standard plates”, carefully balancing the forces of the tongue, cheeks and lips so your dentures sit in the best position for stability and comfort.

At the SmileSpecialist® Centre in Haworth near to Keighley and Bradford, Dr Tony Kilcoyne (UK Specialist in Prosthodontics – there is no higher specialist qualification in dentures) plans each case individually. We can help even when the gums are very shrunken, there are flabby ridges, cleft palate issues, or muscle control problems after a stroke – sometimes with carefully designed dentures alone and sometimes using dental implants to stabilise the denture.

If you still have some natural teeth, you may also be interested in our separate page about precision partial dentures.

Who might benefit from Precision Dentures?

Precision full dentures may be especially helpful if:

  • Your existing dentures are loose, rocking or uncomfortable – see also our page on Common Denture Problems.
  • The lower denture “floats” or lifts when you talk or eat.
  • Your gums and jaw bone have become very shrunken or uneven over time.
  • You have flabby ridges or scar tissue that makes normal denture fitting tricky.
  • You have had a stroke, neurological condition or muscle weakness, making control of dentures more difficult.
  • There are cleft palate or surgical defects which need special design to restore speech and function.

In these situations, careful specialist planning, extra stages and more accurate records of how your lips, cheeks and tongue move can make a big difference to day-to-day comfort and chewing ability.

How are Precision Dentures different from “standard” dentures?

With complete dentures, the chewing forces are carried by the gums and underlying bone rather than by teeth. Over the years the bone can shrink, especially in the lower jaw, making dentures increasingly difficult to stabilise.

Precision dentures pay particular attention to:

  • The neutral zone – the space where the tongue and cheek muscles naturally balance each other, helping dentures stay in place.
  • Maximum denture extensions where appropriate, to spread the chewing forces more evenly over the available support.
  • Careful recording of your bite and jaw movements to avoid tipping or sliding.
  • Shaping the polished surfaces so the muscles help guide the denture into position rather than knocking it out.

The result is often a more stable, more comfortable denture that feels “part of you” rather than something you are constantly fighting with. If you are having teeth removed and need something straight away, you may also wish to read about Immediate Dentures.

Precision Dentures with or without dental implants

For some people – especially with very flat or resorbed lower jaws – the best results come from a precision denture that clips onto two or more dental implants. These are often called implant-retained or implant-supported dentures.

At the SmileSpecialist® Centre near Bradford and Keighley we can assess whether:

  • A carefully made conventional precision denture is likely to be adequate, or
  • You would gain significant extra stability from implants under the denture.

Not everyone wants, needs or is suitable for implants. Our role is to explain the practical pros and cons, likely improvements and costs, so that you can make an informed decision which suits your health, budget and expectations. Typical fees can be found on our Dental Prices page.

Appearance, lip support and a natural smile line

Complete dentures don’t just replace the teeth – they also help support the cheeks and lips that may have “collapsed in” after tooth loss. Thoughtful design can help reduce a sunken appearance, restore facial support and create a more youthful smile.

As part of precision denture planning we look at:

  • The shape, size and colour of the teeth to suit your face and age.
  • The amount of tooth that shows when you talk or smile.
  • How the dentures support your lips and cheeks from the side as well as from the front.
  • Any personal preferences – for example, a more natural “not too perfect” look versus very even, white teeth.

We can even show you trial set-ups in wax so that adjustments can be made before the final dentures are completed. In suitable cases, precision dentures can also be combined with tooth whitening or cosmetic veneers for remaining teeth.

Life with complete dentures – realistic expectations

Even the very best-made dentures will never be quite the same as having your own natural teeth. Biting forces with dentures are usually lower and you still need to control them with your muscles. However, many patients find that precision dentures allow them to eat more comfortably, speak more clearly and smile with greater confidence than before.

We will always be honest about what is realistically achievable in your case, and we will support you through:

  • The initial fitting and “settling-in” period.
  • Any fine-tuning adjustments during the first few weeks.
  • Longer-term reviews to monitor the fit as your mouth continues to change with time.

If you are unsure whether full dentures, partial dentures or an implant-based solution would suit you best, our Specialist Opinion / Make an Appointment page explains how to arrange an assessment.

FAQs about precision dentures at the SmileSpecialist® Centre

A standard denture replaces the teeth and gums but may be made to a relatively simple design. A precision denture involves more detailed records, extra stages and careful shaping of the dentures to work with your muscles, tongue and bite – not against them.

The aim is to improve stability, comfort and appearance, especially in more demanding situations such as very shrunken gums or previous denture failures.

If you still have some of your own teeth, you may be more suitable for a precision partial denture.

Yes – these are exactly the sort of cases where specialist precision denture techniques can be most useful. We look carefully at the shape of your ridges, the neutral zone and how your muscles move, then design the denture base and tooth positions accordingly.

In some very resorbed lower jaws, we may also discuss the option of adding dental implants to help stabilise the denture further. We will always explain the pros, cons and costs before you decide.

We are based in beautiful Haworth, but we regularly see patients from Keighley, Bradford, Halifax, Skipton, Leeds and much further away for complex denture, implant and restorative cases to a high standard.

Many people are referred by their own dentists for a specialist opinion; others also refer themselves here, after struggling with conventional dentures elsewhere. Our Find Us page gives directions and travel information.

Dentures – even very good ones – cannot fully match natural teeth or implants for chewing power. However, many patients find they can eat a much wider range of foods more comfortably after precision denture treatment than they could before.

We will discuss realistic expectations in your case and offer advice on building up gradually to more challenging foods as your confidence grows.

Yes – these are often cases where a prosthodontic specialist is particularly appropriate. We can design dentures and special prostheses to help restore speech, seal against the palate where possible, and improve function despite altered anatomy or compromised muscle control.

Every situation is unique, so we would need to examine you carefully and sometimes liaise with your hospital or medical team before planning the best dental treatment for you.

Your mouth continues to change over time, even after the dentures are made. Precision dentures can often remain serviceable for many years, but they may need occasional relines, adjustments or remakes as the gums and underlying bone remodel.

Regular review visits allow us to spot changes early, ease any trauma areas and keep everything as comfortable and stable as possible. Some people may also eventually move on to implant-retained dentures if further support is needed.

You can be referred by your own dentist, or you may contact us directly at the SmileSpecialist® Centre in Haworth.
